Why are you starting Alfred Nobel School?
The principal purpose is to provide education in accordance with the Swedish school curriculum, Lpo-94, in Kurdistan, Iraq. Swedish Kurds living in Iraq who wish their children to have a Swedish education with a view to keeping the door open to the West constitute our primary target group. Naturally, children from Kurdish and Nordic families who live and work in Kurdistan are also welcome. Alfred Nobel School (ANS) will be founded on and uphold the culture and basic values of the Swedish school curriculum.
The second objective is to work towards a reformation of the Kurdish educational system in general, its methods of instruction and teacher training. The goal is to create an open society of free-thinking and creative citizens through education.
2. How will Alfred Nobel School be organised?
The school will be under the supervision of Sweden’s National Agency for Education.
The school board will be made up of its owners and co-opted experts.
The school will run by Swedish and Swedish-Kurdish personnel. The teaching staff will be well qualified and display a high degree theoretical and practical proficiency. We seek the best!
We would like to a see a parent-teacher association formed to represent the interests of the school’s families as is the practice in Sweden.
A Swedish special-interest group will also be founded. Our school project needs a strong supporter base in Sweden – “Alfred Nobel School Special- Interest Group” (Alfred Nobel Skolans Intresseförening, ANI). ANI will consist primarily of highly qualified, professional teachers with long experience. ANI will constitute ANS’s Swedish bridgehead and administrate most of our affairs in Sweden.
The group willa. contribute instructional support to ANSb. manage personnel recruitment to ANSc. administrate ANS’s affairs with Swedish authorities and organisationsd. gather material and means for the running of ANSA close friend and doctoral candidate in education and enthusiastic friend of Kurds has been asked to organize the special-interest Group, ANI.
3. How will you start?
We will start with two classes, one at grade level 1 level and one at grade level 2 with a total of 50 pupils. And the end of the first school year we will conduct an appraisal and make any changes necessary to reach the goals of the Swedish curriculum in the Kurdish culture. This means that if you wish your school-age child/children (first year or second year) to attend from the start you will have to apply very soon. Places appear to be filling up fast. I will post application details here shortly.
4. Where do you get your money from?
We are starting using our personal capital. In a few years, at best, we may be able to get back our original investment. The school’s accounts are completely separate from our private means and will be audited annually. We are doing this for our children and for the future of Kurdistan. Any surplus from school funds will be re-invested in the school.
To cover costs of salaries, buildings and material we are obliged to take a tuition fee. This will be either USD 200 per month or USD 2000 per year (equivalent to USD 180 per month). This sum can be lower in the future. Pupils who are Swedish citizens have a right to a state contribution. How much this will be for each pupil I do not know now but will post details soon.
